How Seoul Bus-Subway Transfers Work: A Simple Guide

Getting around Seoul is convenient, but transfer rules can be confusing when you try them for the first time. The good news is that the system is simple once you understand a few basic rules.

The most important point is to use one transportation card for the whole trip. T-money cards and other compatible transportation cards work for transfers, but the same card should be used every time you tap.

How the transfer system works

When you board a bus or enter the subway, tap your card as usual. If you get off a bus, you must tap again when getting off. This is essential for the system to recognize your transfer correctly.

In general, the transfer should happen within 30 minutes. During late-night hours from 9 PM to 7 AM, the time limit is usually 60 minutes.

Basic transfer flow

  1. Tap in on the bus or subway.
  2. If you are on a bus, tap out when you get off.
  3. Transfer to another bus or the subway.
  4. Tap with the same card again.
  5. The discounted fare is applied automatically if the transfer is valid.

Common mistakes

  • Not tapping off the bus
  • Using different cards during one trip
  • Taking too long between rides
  • Reboarding the same bus route when transfers do not apply

One more helpful tip: up to 4 transfers can be recognized in one continuous trip. Even so, route details and system updates can affect the exact rules, so always check your taps carefully.

Once you get used to the rhythm, Seoul transfers feel easy and can save both time and money.
