Kakao T can be useful in Korea if you already have a Kakao account, but first-time international visitors should also know about k.ride, Kakao Mobility’s foreigner-focused taxi app.
This guide shows the actual Kakao T flow on an Android phone: changing the app to English, setting a route, comparing taxi types and checking the final request screen.
The screenshots were taken in September 2026.
Taxi types, estimated fares, menus and payment options can change by account, location, time and app version, so use the screen in front of you as the final reference.
Kakao T or k.ride: which is easier for a tourist?
Kakao T is widely used in Korea and VISITKOREA says it can be used by travelers as well as local residents.
To use Kakao T, VISITKOREA currently instructs users to create a Kakao account through KakaoTalk first.
For travelers who do not already use Kakao services, k.ride may be simpler.
Kakao Mobility operates k.ride specifically for international travelers, and official tourism guidance says it supports overseas card registration without requiring KakaoTalk sign-up.
| Situation | Option to consider |
|---|---|
| You already use KakaoTalk and have a Kakao account | Kakao T |
| You do not use Kakao services | k.ride may be easier |
| You want overseas-card registration in a tourist-focused app | k.ride officially supports this |
1. Change Kakao T to English
On the Android phone used for this guide, the language option was available from My Info → Language Settings.

On this device, selecting the language setting opened Android’s per-app language menu.
English was available alongside Korean and Japanese.

After switching to English, the main Kakao T interface changed to English.
Some proper names, taxi brands or map labels may still appear in Korean.

2. Set your pickup point and destination
Tap Taxi, confirm the pickup point and enter your destination.
For this guide, the sample route is Seoul Station (서울역) → Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁).
Before requesting a taxi, zoom in on the pickup pin and check which side of the road you are on.

The fare values in these screenshots are examples shown at the time of capture.
They are not fixed prices for this route.
3. Compare taxi types before requesting
Depending on the area and account, Kakao T can show several vehicle or dispatch options.
In the screenshot used for this article, the list included Venti, Blue Partners, Black, General Request, Deluxe and reservation options for selected vehicle types.

Do not choose only by the lowest number on the screen.
Check the vehicle type, passenger and luggage needs, waiting time, estimated fare and any service conditions shown in the app.
4. Check the final request screen
Before pressing Request, check the route one more time.
The final screen can show the pickup point, destination, taxi service, estimated arrival time, estimated fare, payment method and any service fee or other pricing information.

Privacy note: the card name and point balance have been masked in the screenshot used for this post.
Account-specific payment information is not shown in the public image.
5. Payment: do not assume every foreign card works the same way
VISITKOREA currently explains that Kakao T users can use available in-app payment options or, where the service allows it, pay the driver directly by cash, credit card or T-money.
The screenshot in this guide shows a Korean registered card.
It does not prove that every overseas card can be registered in Kakao T.
If overseas card registration is important for your trip, k.ride is the clearer official option.
Kakao Mobility and VISITKOREA both state that k.ride supports overseas credit-card registration for international travelers.
6. After dispatch: check the vehicle information
After a taxi is assigned, confirm the vehicle information shown in the app before getting in.
VISITKOREA notes that Kakao T provides the driver name and plate number after dispatch.
7. If the driver cannot find you
Check your pickup pin first.
Large stations, hotels and shopping complexes may have several entrances or taxi zones.
Moving the pin to the actual roadside pickup point can be more useful than leaving it in the middle of a large building.
Quick checklist before requesting a taxi
- Is the pickup pin on the correct side of the road?
- Is the destination the correct branch or entrance?
- Did you choose the taxi type you want?
- Did you check the estimated fare?
- Did you check the payment method?
- Is there a service fee or other condition shown?
- After dispatch, did you confirm the plate number?
