Seoul Subway Rush Hour: Times and Routes to Avoid

Visiting Seoul by subway? If you have a suitcase or an airport connection, allow extra time on busy weekday trains. This guide combines Seoul’s published subway crowding statistics with my own commuting experience. The figures below have been checked against the source spreadsheets.

Seoul Subway Rush Hours

In my experience, Seoul trains get particularly crowded on weekdays from 07:30–09:00 and 17:00–19:00, Korea Standard Time (KST). These are my practical observation windows, not time ranges certified by the official datasets. Conditions vary by train, direction, day and service.

My Line 2 Commute

I currently commute on Line 2. I find the morning and evening peaks very crowded, especially near the dense office corridor of Gyodae (Seoul National University of Education) → Gangnam → Yeoksam. Gyodae is not Seoul National University Station (Seoul National Univ.), which is a different station. I have also experienced Line 9 express trains feeling so full during those periods that boarding can be difficult; that is a personal impression, not evidence that every train is impossible to board.

Six Busy Subway Sections

The six examples below are weekday, direction-specific, approximately half-hour averages, not real-time forecasts or rankings of entire lines. The station sequences are selected reference points, not complete lists of consecutive stations or express stops.

Line 2 Morning: Toward Gyodae

Weekday 08:00–08:30 KST; Line 2; direction Gyodae; selected route: Seoul Nat’l Univ. → Nakseongdae → Sadang → Bangbae → Seocho → Gyodae. Official weekday crowding example.

For a morning trip through the south-western part of Line 2 toward Gyodae, trains can already be crowded before arriving at the office district. The data show Sadang 144.8% and Bangbae 142.0%. These figures do not measure the separate Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam corridor in my personal account.

Crowding example for Seoul subway Line 2, weekday 08:00–08:30, toward Gyodae; selected stations Seoul Nat'l Univ. to Nakseongdae to Sadang to Bangbae to Seocho to Gyodae. The author's separate Line 2 commute note covers 07:30–09:00 near Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam.
Line 2, morning toward Gyodae: weekday sample only; Sadang 144.8% is a verified sample from the weekday crowding data. Author’s experience: weekday 07:30–09:00 near Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam; not this measured route.

Line 2 Evening: Toward Sadang

Weekday 18:00–18:30 KST; Line 2; direction Sadang; selected route: Gangnam → Gyodae → Seocho → Bangbae → Sadang. Official weekday crowding example.

In the evening, the direction of concern changes to Line 2’s inner-loop movement from Gangnam past Gyodae and Seocho toward Sadang. The figures include Seocho 144.7% and Bangbae 146.3%. Avoid describing the morning and evening problem as the same-direction flow.

Crowding example for Seoul subway Line 2, weekday 18:00–18:30, toward Sadang; selected stations Gangnam to Gyodae to Seocho to Bangbae to Sadang. A separate author note describes Line 2 crowding from 17:00–19:00 near Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam.
Line 2, evening toward Sadang: weekday sample only; Bangbae 146.3% is a verified sample from the weekday crowding data. Author’s experience: weekday 17:00–19:00 near Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam; separate from the sample.

Line 4 Morning: Toward Dongdaemun

Weekday 08:00–08:30 KST; Line 4; direction Dongdaemun; selected route: Hansung Univ. → Hyehwa → Dongdaemun. Official weekday crowding example.

The 4-line corridor from Hansung University through Hyehwa to Dongdaemun can be busy in the morning. The data report Hansung University 137.9% and Hyehwa 130.9%. This direction continues toward central Seoul connections, but these figures must not be reused as measurements for Myeongdong or Seoul Station.

Crowding example for Seoul subway Line 4, weekday 08:00–08:30, toward Dongdaemun; selected stations Hansung Univ. to Hyehwa to Dongdaemun.
Line 4, morning toward Dongdaemun: weekday sample only; Hansung Univ. 137.9% is a verified sample from the weekday crowding data.

Line 9 Express AM: Toward VHS Medical Center

Weekday 08:00–08:29 KST; Line 9; direction VHS Medical Center; selected route: Yeomchang → Dangsan → Yeouido → Noryangjin → Dongjak. Official weekday crowding example.

Line 9 express can be crowded in the morning toward VHS Medical Center, not just in the airport direction. The data include Yeouido 162.5%, Noryangjin 175.1% and Dongjak 171.5% in this direction. Reduced station names in this guide do not represent an exhaustive express stopping pattern.

Crowding example for Seoul subway Line 9, weekday 08:00–08:29, toward VHS Medical Center; selected stations Yeomchang to Dangsan to Yeouido to Noryangjin to Dongjak. A separate author note describes difficulty boarding Line 9 express at rush hour, without naming a direction.
Line 9, morning toward VHS Medical Center: weekday sample only; Noryangjin 175.1% is a verified sample from the weekday crowding data. Author’s Line 9 express experience is not tied to this direction or measured interval.

Line 9 Express AM: Toward Gimpo Int’l Airport

Weekday 08:00–08:29 KST; Line 9; direction Gimpo Int’l Airport; selected route: Express Bus Terminal → Dongjak → Noryangjin. Official weekday crowding example.

Morning express services toward Gimpo Int’l Airport can also be crowded. The sample includes Express Bus Terminal 166.6%, Dongjak 179.6% and Noryangjin 179.7%. Never assume that “airport-bound” always means a quiet train.

Crowding example for Seoul subway Line 9, weekday 08:00–08:29, toward Gimpo Int'l Airport; selected stations Express Bus Terminal to Dongjak to Noryangjin.
Line 9, morning toward Gimpo Int’l Airport: weekday sample only; Noryangjin 179.7% is a verified sample from the weekday crowding data.

Line 9 Express PM: Toward Gimpo Int’l Airport

Weekday 18:00–18:29 KST; Line 9; direction Gimpo Int’l Airport; selected route: Express Bus Terminal → Dongjak → Noryangjin → Yeouido → Dangsan. Official weekday crowding example.

The evening Gimpo Int’l Airport-bound Line 9 express is also worth planning around: the 18:00–18:29 averages include Express Bus Terminal 175.5% and Dongjak 174.0%. A Dongjak value of 175.7% was recorded for 18:30–18:59. These are separate half-hour samples, not a guarantee for a particular train.

Gyodae–Gangnam–Yeoksam: My Experience

For sightseeing or shopping in Gyodae, Gangnam and Yeoksam, my Line 2 commuter experience suggests giving yourself flexibility around weekday office arrival and departure hours. This is a separate observation from the official sampled percentages at Sadang or Bangbae. Consider arriving earlier or later when your plans allow; a seat or an uncrowded train is not guaranteed.

Traveling with Luggage

When traveling with a suitcase, avoid squeezing into a crowded train if your schedule allows a later departure. For an airport or rail departure, prioritize a comfortable buffer before your reserved check-in or departure time rather than risking a late arrival simply to avoid the rush. A Line 9 local train may be worth comparing with an express train, but it is not automatically faster, emptier or better. Check the route and timetable for your journey.

These are travel-planning tips, not a statement of baggage acceptance rules. If you need precise luggage restrictions, use the relevant operator’s current published conditions. An announced future timetable change should never be described as already operating.

Official Data and Personal Experience

The Seoul Metro dataset describes 30-minute average crowding in relation to a train’s planned passenger capacity. It notes that a train with all seats occupied corresponds to around 34%, so 100% does not mean only the seats are full. The Line 9 source describes 100% relative to a specified six-car loading benchmark. Neither dataset describes live platform crowding or guarantees what will happen on your individual train.

Sources: Seoul Metro Lines 1–8 crowding data and Seoul Line 9 crowding data. The Line 9 weekday express survey covers July 6–31, 2026. The Lines 1–8 spreadsheet is named with the date 20260930, which should not be treated as its verified survey period; exact survey start and end dates are not specified in the source reviewed. The displayed percentages were checked against the original spreadsheet cells on October 28, 2026. These are weekday averages and should not be assumed to represent weekends, holidays or the next train.

Seoul Subway Rush Hour FAQ

Is 09:00 always quiet?

No. My experience window ends around 09:00, but individual services may remain crowded.

Should I avoid Line 9 express when flying?

Plan a sufficient airport-arrival buffer. Compare local or alternative routes but do not assume either direction is empty.

Does 100% mean no seats remain?

No. These datasets measure carriage loading relative to nominal passenger capacity, not just seated places.

Are the figures real-time?

No. They are weekday time-interval averages, not live train or platform crowding reports.

Is Gyodae the same as Seoul National University Station?

No. Gyodae is Seoul National University of Education; Seoul National Univ. (Seoul Nat’l Univ.) is another Line 2 station.
